According to eyewitness report, the student, Augustine Ajom, engaged the police officer who was holding a AK47 rifle in a heated argument over a missing phone, later resulting in the student being shot by the police officer..
Due to this act, members of the community became angry and assaulted one of the police men and went further in setting ablaze, a Volkswagen Golf car which was used for the special mission.by the police men.
The shot student alongside victims of the mob attack are currently recieving treatment at the Obarike-ito General hospital after being transfered from a clinic at Itakpa.
However, reacting to this report is Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO,Deputy Superitendent of police, DSP Daniel Ezeala;
"A mob in the said village attack attack the police men on patrol duties for an unidentifiable reasons; they also went a step further to set ablaze their car after thoroughly manhandling one of the police men. There is no truth in their claim that our men shot a student of the community before the attack; it is absolutely false".
